Vegan Butter Recipe – A Plant-based Butter Substitute

Do you need butter or vegan margarine for your recipes? You can make homemade with coconut oil and olive oil.

Vegan butter is ideal to use in recipes where they ask you for butter. Vegans take their food very seriously and often prepare their own recipes. Although there is more and more vegan butter alternative at home we can achieve easy recipes and results.

The homemade vegan butter is a perfect butter substitute and can be used to spread alone with toast and for any recipe that indicates it. Many people always ask how to replace soy yogurt to make vegan cheeses. Well, soy milk can be curdled with a bit of apple cider or cider vinegar. However, the soymilk tastes slightly sour, so it can be used to make vegan cheeses and creams.

Handmade Vegan Butter Recipe

Ingredients for about 450 grams

  • 300 grams (1 and 1/2 cups) of liquid refined coconut oil (eye: no extra virgin)
  • 110 grams (1/2 cup) of soy, cashew or almond milk (I used homemade almonds )
  • 55 grams (1/4 cup) of rapeseed oil, light olive oil or grape seeds (I used grape seeds)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons of liquid soy lecithin or 4 to 8 teaspoons of soy lecithin in granules (soy lecithin prevents the ingredients from separating: I used 6 teaspoons)



Put all the ingredients in the blender jar and beat at medium speed for 1 minute, until all the mixture is emulsified.


Then, put it in some silicone molds, so that it will be easier to unmold it.


Leave it in the refrigerator for several hours so that it hardens and is ready. You can also speed up the process by putting it in the freezer.


In the refrigerator it will last 3 or 4 weeks and, in the freezer, it will be several months.



To make the butter add other ingredients to imitate the flavor and a touch of yellow coloring. This is optional though. The ingredients are easy to get in a pastry house or dietetics.

Other ways to vary this recipe

Butter aged

Replace vegetable milk with 1/2 cup of natural soy yogurt without sweetening or sweetening or add 1 teaspoon of cider vinegar or lemon juice to vegetable milk.

Butter very hard

This butter serves to make puff pastry, croissants and things like that. Increase coconut oil: pour 2 cups and 1/2. Or use 1/2 cup of deodorized cocoa butter instead of 1/2 cup of coconut oil.

Whipped butter

Increase oil in 1 scoop and whisk at high speed for 2 minutes to incorporate as much air as possible.

It’s surprisingly quick to prepare if you have those simple kitchen products at hand. In addition, it is much healthier than vegan (and non-vegan) butter sold in the market and that it is suitable for the lactose and casein intolerant. I hope you enjoy it!
